Dear Colleague,
With great pleasure, I introduce to you the
second issue of AL-MUHANDES with activities by
our engineering communities across the country,
from the first election in the Tri-States
(NY-NJ-CT), to the semi-annual meeting in
Chicago, to seminars in Texas and Michigan, to
the one-day technical conference in Chicago, to
selection a steering committee in Orlando, FL,
to a social meeting Fort- Lauderdale, FL, and to
the LabNet joint event in the Silicon Valley,
CA.
I would like to thank and congratulate all our
associations for the great job in November.
Especially to the Tri-states on their first
election on November 4th, 2007 and to
the AAAEA-Chicago for the semi-annual meeting
which was attended by over 250 people on
November 2nd, 2007.
As November is the Arab Heritage month in
Chicago, Mayor Daley held a reception for the
Arab community and recognized the AAAEA for
their activities and for the services they
provide in Chicago. Congratulations to the
AAAEA on that.
In conclusion, November was a busy month with
about 10 activities across the country.
On a different note, the national committees are
working hard on all aspect to accomplish their
tasks. The newsletter committee has issued the
first and the second issues; the mission
statement is being finalized; the logo and the
name committees are working hand in hand to
finalize the name and the logo by the end of the
year.
Finally, I hope we are meeting your
expectations, please feel free to contribute in
any aspect and be part of our national efforts.
Sincerely;
Mustafa Mahamid, PhD, PE
National Steering Committee Chairman

A
Message from AAAEA-IL President
Recently I was thrilled to accept the Leadership
Award on behalf of AAAEA from the Mayor of
Chicago and Commission on Human Relations
Advisory Council on Arab Affairs during the Arab
Heritage Month. This honor really has to do with
effort from all our Executive Board, past and
present and the Board of Trustees, who help keep
this association on a steady course; our
volunteers who donate their time for our
programs and special event that help us
provide reach our goal by providing programs and
services to our members and community.

Open
Source : the basics you must know
Since the beginning of the software
industry, nearly every software company in
the world has followed the same business
model: developed software by the company's
own employees, closely held intellectual
property, delivered software in binary
format to clients, and licensed software to
users to run on their own computers. Today,
however, that model is being challenged by a
new paradigm: open source. Developed and
maintained by volunteers across the world,
distributed to users at no cost, and
available in source code form, open source
software is radically different from its
proprietary counterpart. Each of the new
characteristics of the open source software
forces organizations to develop new ways of
thinking about how they procure, implement,
test, and deploy software.
