40+ Job Listings for the month of June

Dear M.,

Our Associations have been active during the month June and have plans for picnics, fund raising, and National Outreach to the west coast during the summer of 2008.

Reaching out to people is a key to our success and continuity; this is achieved by reaching out to professional associations and participating in their events, by involvement in community events, by spreading the word in our offices, and by promoting the association via media.

As our ultimate goal is to provide service to our membership and support our community, AAAEA-Illinois raised funds and was one of the sponsors for the ARABESQUE (ARAB Festival) in Chicago for the second year.  The AAAEA had a booth in the festival to promote the association and attract new members. As a result, 47 members have joined the association in 2007 and we expecting more this year.

The Wisconsin Arab American Engineers and Architects association is arranging a fund raising event in Milwaukee, WI on July 26, 2008.  The money will be raised to support the Arab engineering students in Wisconsin universities with scholarships.  This is a great event and we hope to see such an event happening in every city and state.

As part of our National outreach efforts, The AAAEA-Illinois national outreach committee is arranging meetings with our colleagues in Las Vegas, Los Angeles, and San Diego in the last week of August. I encourage all Arab Engineers, Architects, and IT professionals in these areas to attend, and learn about the association. The exact dates and locations will be advertised in the August 1st issue of Al-Muhandes.

The National Steering Committee conducted a "Name and Logo Contest" for the national association in December, 2007 issue; unfortunately we didn't get any participants.  We are advertising for it again in this issue hoping to get new ideas to help select a name and a logo for the national association.

Sincerely,

Mustafa Mahamid, PhD, PE
National Steering Committee Chairman

Dr. Riyadh Hindi knows that we live in an uncertain world. While we can attempt to identify where and when earthquakes will occur, they remain largely unpredictable. While we can build structures to withstand seismic activity, an earthquake can cause any building or bridge to fail.

"An earthquake is uncertain," says Hindi, associate professor of civil engineering. "Chance plays a big role. You cannot predict how far you will be from the epicenter and the amount of loading the quake will place on the bridge." An optimistic man with an easy smile, Hindi, however, embraces this uncertainty in his research. "Based on experience, we design." He knows that it would be uneconomical and unrealistic for engineers to design structures that could withstand a catastrophic earthquake, but he does believe that it is possible to make structures safer during and after a moderate quake. Since working on his doctorate at the University of British Columbia, he has experimented with ways to improve the concrete members used in bridges and buildings so that they can better withstand the loads and deformations placed on them during an earthquake. His goal is not only to help save lives during an earthquake, but also to design structures that could be serviceable in the aftermath.

In his most recent work, which has been funded by a grant from the National Science Foundation, along with support from the university, he has developed a way to make concrete columns more ductile-more flexible so that they can withstand greater deformation...

Brickworld Exhibition

I attended the LEGO - Brickworld exhibition -- Westin Hotel, Wheeling - Saturday, June 21st. Too bad I learned of this so so so so late.

I think a few of you might have wanted to attend (especially those with children , grand-children) after seeing what is posted near the end of this message

But then let me offer something else...................

At the exhibition I met ALAN REED TUCKER, AIA who runs the www.brickstructures.com   website, organization. He has built some the models you will see at the end of the message. We might considering inviting him to one of our meetings ???

And maybe he might even give a presentation of his "THE ART OF ARCHITECTURE" as seen through the eyes of Adam Reed Tucker.

 Just a thought.
