Dear M.,
I am happy to
report some major events for our associations during
the month of April. First I would like to
congratulate the AAEA - Michigan on their elections
wishing them prosperous and productive year. I
would like to congratulate the new president
Ghassan Abdelnour
and his new board for being elected and looking
forward to their cooperation with the national
steering committee towards forming the national
association in 2011.
Second, I
would like to extend my congratulations to our
colleagues in Washington DC/Maryland/Virginia area
in registering the association with the state of
Maryland. We are very proud of the efforts they put
to start their association. They have continuous
membership meetings to establish a solid base before
electing their first board on the fall of 2008.
I am happy to
report to our members that DOW-chemicals has reached
out to our association to build a relation and
explore opportunities. This is a big credit to our
association and we are looking forward to building a
strong relation and cooperation with them to benefit
our members in the future.
As most
departments of regulation and licensing around the
country require professional development hours for
license renewals, I would like to ask our sister
associations around the country to provide
continuous educational seminars, annual or semi
annual full-day conferences and provide their
members with enough professional development hours (PDHs)
for their members. Our associations in Illinois,
Texas, and Tri-states have been active on this
aspect and I would like to thank them for their
efforts. The AAAEA-Illinois holds a monthly seminar
and two full-day conferences annually. The AAAEA-Illinois
is holding its spring conference on May 10th,
2008.
The national
steering committee and its subcommittees continue to
work on their tasks; they are in the process of
preparing their semi-annual report of
accomplishments and planning for the third national
conference in Chicago on October, 2008.
Your
membership, help, and contribution is essential to
the success of our associations around the country
and for the national association overall.
Sincerely,
Mustafa
Mahamid, PhD, PE
National
Steering Committee Chairman

The Need For and the Development of Seismic
Codes in the United States : Part II
By Mustafa Mahamid, Ph.D., P.E.
The accelerograms from the instruments

that lead to a new era in seismic codes.
In 1943, the city of Los Angeles recognized
the influence of flexibility on earthquake
design coefficients and adjusted the seismic
coefficient, as a function of the number of
