Dear Fuad,

Salamat,

Last month we had two major events which we would like to share.  First was the  2nd National Conference in Dearborn Michigan where delegates from 8 different AAAEA state chapters met to discuss future challenges and opportunities.  Thanks to the excellent preparatory work by Bilal Masri and his team, much was accomplished.   The most significant achievement was the selection of a National Steering Committee who will be working on a proposal for a national structure.  Their proposal will be presented in a year's time - at the next National Conference.

The second major event was the Tri-state Nomination Conference held on Sept 9th.   The event was a great success and more than 90 professionals of various fields attended.  We all had a nice evening and many thanks to ALL of you for making this event possible.  We would also like to take the opportunity to give a very special thanks to our key note speakers and sponsors for their effort and contribution.

Please take note that the first Tri-State  election will be held on Nov 4th 2007 with our colleague Mr. Maher Abdelqader heading the Nomination Committee.  (The By-laws will be adopted concurrently in the same event).

Mark your calendar; Nomination deadline is Oct 28th 2007, deadline for Bylaws comments or proposed revisions is Oct 21st 2007 (only by e-mail).

To be eligible for voting, you must be an active (paid) member by Oct 28th 2007.  Your vote counts.

Yours,

Fuad Issa, PE

Chairman steering committee

Nomination Event
Attendees of the Nomination Event pose for a group picture With 90 Professional attending and with three great speakers this event was by all measures a success. It was moderated by Mr. Yosry Bekheit who introduced us to all the events' speakers.

The event started with Mr. Fuad Issa giving us the introduction and history of AAAEA along with its impact on the Arab-American professional community. This was followed by Mr. Maher Abdel Qader who explained the Tri-State By-Laws and briefed the audience on the election guidelines.

After Dinner Mr. Yosry introduced us to the first key note speaker of the Dinner, Mr. Magdy Ismail. Mr. Magdy Ismail was born and educated in Heliopolis, Cairo, Egypt and is currently the president and COO of Urbitran Group.  Mr. Ismail focused his topic on the pitfalls of owning a company.  The next speaker Mr. Georgy Sholy spoke about the importance of networking in the Arab community and he continues to support his fellow Arab-Americans by providing them with opportunities whenever possible. The last speaker of the night Mr. Emad Abou-Sabe, a principal at HACBM, spoke mainly to the young professionals in the room, sharing with them four key lessons for success:  1) One is not entitled to anything in life; 2) always take the moral high road; 3) recognize your diversity and the advantage that it brings and 4) do it with passion and intent.

The night ended with a group photograph -- and last minute networking!

Declaration of Second National Conference
Mustafa, Chairman of National AAAEA Steering CommitteeOn 11/11/2006, the first ever national conference for Arab-American engineers, architects, and computer professionals was hosted by the AAAEA in Chicago, Illinois.  The meeting was attended by representatives from 7 states and produced a 5-year strategic plan to establish a national engineering association in the United States.  The Second National Conference was held in Dearborn, Michigan on 9/01/2007 under the theme of "Going National Together" and attended by representatives from MI, IN, IL, WI, TX, FL, NY, NJ, CT, and CA. Representatives from LA and WA were not able to attend. The meeting discussed the timetable, components and infrastructure for a national organization. Among the subjects discussed were structure, bylaws, e-newsletter, mission, duties, legal, name, and selecting a steering committee.....Read More

Newsletter Survey Results

Icon for a Newsletter survey taken in august 2007
Before I begin, I would like to thank everyone who filled out the survey.

I was happy to find out that most of our respondents were at least somewhat satisfied with our newsletter, found the newsletter somewhat relevant to them and gave us an above average rating for our current design.

However, our respondents also directed us to many improvements that we need to make:

  • An overwhelming majority would like this newsletter to be bi-weekly.
  • Also, every section in this newsletter with the exception of "Upcoming Events" was listed for "needs most improvement".
  • We also received multiple comments on adding a technical side to this newsletter.
To meet the demands of this survey, we started by changing our current design and the newsletter will now be published bi-weekly on Monday morning. We will start improving our Employment Opportunites page since it was ranked as most important, and hopefully we will improve each and every section of our newsletter before Tri-State elections in November.

Regarding adding a technical field, that will have to wait until after the elections, since we currently do not have that capacity, however, we will add any technical articles you send our way.

WINNERS  vs.  LOSERS

Provided by Yosry Bekhiet

Winners have dreams;                                    Losers have schemes.
Winners see the gains;                                   Losers see the pain.
Winners see the potential;                              Losers see the past.
Winners make it happen;                                 Losers let it happen.
Winners see possibilities;                               Losers see problems.
Winners make commitments;                         Losers make promises.
Winners are a part of the team;                       Losers are apart from the team.
Winner always has a programme;                   Loser always has an excuse.
Winner says "Let me do it for you";               Loser says "That is not my job".
Winners say "I must do something";              Losers say "Something must be done".
Winner is always a part of the answer;           Loser is always a part of the problem.
Winner sees an answer for every problem;    Loser sees a problem for every answer.
Winners believe in win/win;                              Losers believe for them to win, someone has to lose.

Winner says "It may be difficult but it is possible"; Loser says "It may be possible but it is too difficult".

Winner when makes a mistake he says "I was  wrong"; Loser makes a mistake, he says "It wasn't my  fault".

which one are you???????????
